The Division of Archaeology in the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is responsible for prehistoric and historic archeological sites, including submerged sites, on lands owned or controlled by the state. In 1966, the state of Tennessee purchased 400 acres of the Chumbley estate as the core of what is now Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park.
